Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them floated into the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
