RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several approach shafts providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," Healey commented. "They were among a great many British personnel on duty over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our safety, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces executed what it termed a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
