EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.

Additional Updates Reported Today

In related judicial news:

  • A US district judge has blocked efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to local governments that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge ruled the action was “a further instance” of tying federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the new year, alongside an ongoing border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to take in dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for additional aid, after concluding a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international actions.
