The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a side that had conceded ten goals while netting just two in their most recent five league matches. A Season Unraveling?
Was the team's progress unraveling, or was there ever any cohesion keeping it intact in the first place? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager this summer, but then he publicly stated that the club had omitted to inform him about a registration embargo they were about to receive for accounting issues. Speculation that he might quit were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "deceived" him.
Lazio were just as chaotic on the pitch as off the field, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the rest of their opening fixtures, featuring the derby della Capitale. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to determine if progress is being made or self-destructing.
Cancellieri's Unforeseen Return
One individual kept smiling throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio during this campaign. He was on the previous campaign at Parma as a loanee and, early this summer, his owning club were pushing for him to remain there a while longer. The transfer ban necessitated a reconsideration. He signed in the first place during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 league appearances with the club in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri would be a star only to bench him consistently."
Uncovering His Natural Fit
Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to determine the specific characteristics of his skill set. Billed as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri nevertheless spent much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role.
