Tetris Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

As any major awards ceremony draws close, you'll find a clamor for introducing of new categories to honor unsung work and fill the spirits of fans with niche passions.

My colleague made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category that year
  • A different innovative game missed out during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game got ignored that year
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent compact experiences, however the design of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles globally and have been for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
