US Military Operation on Venezuela Stokes Fears of Future Danish Territory Takeover.

Recent US-led military action in Venezuela and the seizure of its leader have renewed unease regarding America's designs on the Arctic territory. Followers of the former president's base have reportedly turned their attention to the strategically important landmass in the wake of the events in the southern hemisphere.

Provocative Posts and Diplomatic Backlash

Only a short time after the initiation of the Venezuelan campaign, a well-known right-wing podcaster, who is the spouse of a high-ranking White House adviser, posted a suggestive map. The graphic depicted Greenland covered in the American flag, with the single-word message: "SOON."

This overt threat to claim the mineral-rich land, which is a member of the NATO alliance, triggered swift and strong condemnation from Denmark's representatives.

"Denmark and the US are strong partners and should continue to work together as such. US security is equally Greenland’s and Denmark’s security," declared the Danish ambassador to the United States. "The Kingdom of Denmark and the United States work together to ensure security in the Arctic."

The diplomat additionally pointed out that the kingdom had substantially boosted its defence spending this year, allocating a large amount expressly for Arctic and regional defence. "And yes, we expect full respect for the sovereign borders of the our realm," he added.

Administrative Appointments and Strategic Goals

The tensions were further complicated by the recent appointment of a Southern governor as a special envoy to Greenland. The governor had openly thanked the commander-in-chief, saying it was an "honour" to serve in a unpaid role to "bring Greenland into the US."

Following the events in Venezuela, this envoy praised the administration's actions, connecting it to the broader "fight against narcotics."

Ever since returning to office, the American leader has consistently unnerved transatlantic allies with his stated desire in Greenland. The territory is considered critically important for defence and potential mineral exploitation. It currently houses the most northerly US air base.

Leaving the Door Open to Force

In a notable television interview, the president declined to exclude the resorting to military force to gain control of Greenland. This stance comes amid growing global rivalry in the polar region. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he stated.

He characterized Greenland as having a "very small amount of people, which we’ll look after, and we’ll cherish them... But we need that for global security."

Mounting Tensions and Indigenous Resistance

In response to this persistent "rhetoric" of threats, Danish intelligence service took the extraordinary step last month of labelling the United States as a "potential threat."

The prime ministers of Denmark and Greenland issued a joint and stern statement: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You must not annex other countries."

Public opinion in Greenland shows a nuanced sentiment. While a overwhelming percentage of the island's inhabitants seek independence from Denmark, there is also little to no desire to become part of the United States. The territory has had the option to declare sovereignty for many years.

Expert Assessment: A Credible Threat?

Some experts are increasingly reconsidering the possibility of such a move. One policy director focusing in military analysis conceded she had previously dismissed the rhetoric but was "now not so sure."

"Logistically, it would be feasible for the US to deploy a few hundred or a couple thousand troops inside of Greenland, and it's unclear to me who could intervene about it," she concluded.
